If there is one sector that has been immune to any crisis it is that ofanimal care. The numbers show it clearly: one constant annual growth of 3% at European level (SymphonyIRI Group research 2013) and a diffusion of domestic and companion animals in our country, which is now widespread, since it has reached the number of 60 million units; of which 14 million are dogs (48%) and cats (52%), 13 million birds, 30 million fish and about 3 million reptiles, rodents and small animals. The veterinary healthcare offer is also adapting to this trend, in fact there is a progressive increase in size of medical facilities dedicated to animals, which now compete with human hospitals in terms of quantity and quality of services. Hospitalizations, complex surgeries, specialist analyzes, latest generation treatments and therapies borrowed from human scientific research.
An increasingly necessary figure in this type of health care facilities, as well as in traditional veterinary practices, is that of the veterinary assistant. This professional figure has among his main duties to assist the veterinarian in the medical aspects, personally take care of all the logistical and administrative aspects, of the sanitation of the working and waiting rooms and of the reception of patients and their owners.
Another field of application of this professional figure, of certain interest in the perspective of a quick placement, is that offered by centers specialized in pet therapy and in behavioral and psychological counseling for animals. These are sectors in full expansion, and the already positive context of animal care, which denote how the relationship between animal and owner is evolving towards an ever greater awareness of the rights and needs of our four-legged companions.
