The port and maritime logistics expert has specific training to fully manage the maritime transport of goods mainly by container ships.
Specifically, it is responsible for ensuring optimal planning in compliance with safety standards, which requires a series of evaluations upstream, first and foremost that of the type and characteristics of the goods and/or people that will be loaded. This knowledge, in fact, makes it possible to guarantee a stable set-up, optimise available space and minimise loading times, also taking into account that it may be necessary to load goods with non-standard dimensions. The work of the terminal planning manager is carried out with the support of computer programmes to draw up the loading and unloading plan and assign the position where containers are to be placed on the yard according to procedural parameters (company, ship, destination, type of goods) thanks to logistical optimisation algorithms.
This plan thus drawn up is handed over to the shift managers who physically coordinate the operational staff during the loading phase. Since the plan may be subject to change, the terminal planning manager and the operations personnel remain in communication throughout the loading process to implement any changes.
The training is mainly geared towards imparting specific skills applicable to container ships. However, it is also possible to extend this knowledge to some extent to ferries and ships that exclusively transport passengers, i.e. cruise ships.
