Crabon Offset: Airlines join Co2 offset programs

carbon offset accademia del lavoro

We hear more and more of carbon offset shadow between airline companies: is the concept that "The polluter pays" and more and more companies offer voluntary compensation programs.

With the'increased flights (we are talking about over 200 thousand flights in 2018), concern for the health of the planet is becoming more and more non-existent. One of the main causes of carbon dioxide production is represented by human activity and by flights and, in a crucial moment like the present one, in which there is so much talk about climate change, even in this sector we are running for cover.

According to the study of the Grantham Research Institute of the London School of Economics, the world of aviation contributes 2 percent to global greenhouse gas emissions and 12 percent to CO2 emissions.

To remedy this situation, for some time now, some companies have been offering passengers the possibility of offset Co2 emissions resulting from their flight, paying an additional amount when purchasing the ticket.

To get an idea, in economic terms, of this cost, just think that for a flight of 2,500 kilometers, equivalent to a return flight from Milan to London, about 5 euros more are spent on the "normal" cost. of the ticket.

Obviously the prices vary depending on the airline company, but the proceeds have the same noble purpose, namely the financing of projects for the fight against climate change, thanks to the development of renewable energies, reforestation or the planting of trees on land that originally did not have any.
At present this system of the carbon offset based on the "polluter pays" principle, it is still adopted by a few companies: they do not yet compensate for Co2 or Alitalia nor Air Italy e Blue Panorama and not even the largest airline in the world, theAmerican Airlines.

The paluso, on the other hand, goes to the airlines: Lufthansa, KLM, Air France, British Airways, Austrian, Brussels Airlines, Finnair, Sas, Qatar Airways, Delta, Air Canada, Qantas, Cathay Pacific, Air New Zealand, China Airlies, Japan Airlines and Jetstar. And among the low-cost: Ryanair, Easyjet.
