Mistakes not to make in a job interview

colloquio di lavoro accademia del lavoro

We often wonder how to behave when dealing with a job interview, what can be done to increase the interlocutor's positive perception of himself; the truth is that it would be enough not to make trivial mistakes to avoid a disastrous result. In an article by Republic Economy last March (read the article), the main ones were collected mistakes not to make in a job interview.
Here's what they are.

1. Look at the cell phone

It may seem trivial, but the former mistake not to make during an interview - we could say not only about work - is looking at the mobile phone, a very annoying thing, which denotes a low level of education, interest, professionalism and above all respect. Therefore, it is better to keep it off during the interview or in silent mode, so as not to give in to the temptation to go and see who called us or wrote us on whatsapp or leave the "like" to the post shared on our Facebook page.

2. Be accompanied

A mistake not to be made absolutely is to be accompanied by parents or friends or relatives or even by the partner to job interviews: it is synonymous with lack of maturity and one gives the impression of not being able to make conscious decisions, denotes lack of independence and security, which are two important soft-skills to focus on.

3. Wear sports clothing

Better to avoid showing up in front of a recruiter in jeans and a sweatshirt or a t-shirt and shorts: it is not necessary -
indeed it is to be avoided - wearing a jacket and tie - but clothing that is sober, professional, serious and not excessive is the right answer to how to dress for a job interview.

4. Not knowing the company

It doesn't make a good impression if you show up in a company without knowing anything about it. How much better is it to come to the interview with clear ideas, perhaps having done a small study, a research on the company and the position it is looking for. It is not necessary to know the reality in a precise and optimal way, but a previous study, even if not in depth, helps not to ask wrong or trivial questions and to make a good impression in the eyes of the recruiter.

5. Don't ask questions

A mistake not to make during the job interview is not to ask questions: in this case you give the impression of being little interested, not very attentive, not very awake, too passive.

Other mistakes you shouldn't make in a job interview

After explaining in detail some of the main mistakes not to make during an interview, here is a list of other aspects to keep an eye on to prevent the meeting from failing:

  • communication: being able to communicate, knowing how to speak and express oneself is always the first way to make an excellent impression;
  • the cover letter: it must not be a copy and paste from the internet; better to take inspiration and re-elaborate;
    sincerity: it does not pay to say so many untruthful things about oneself, to be sincere and to focus on the skills that one really has;
  • posture: erect, soft, not rigid or set. Let's not forget that our body communicates and could give wrong messages if we don't take care of its posture;
  • online reputation: our social media profiles often tell more about us than a resume; so better pay attention to how we use them!
  • training: we take care of our training, presenting ourselves to an interview with the right skills. Studying always pays off!
