Flight, general rules of the air: right of way and overtaking

precedenze

Without prejudice to the general rule according to which no aircraft can be conducted near other aircraft, precisely to avoid dangerous situations during flight, to avoid collisions between two vehicles, it is important that pilots adhere to some very strict rules. precise.

As reported in the manual "Elements of flight theory and aeronautical culture", from Paolo G. Malerba, (used by the students of the Flight Operation Officer course, from Accademia del Lavoro) in the chapter on "precedence“, Should that situation arise in which two private aircraft, coming from opposite routes, the collision is at risk, the rule to follow for both pilots will be that of "pull over to the right". Basically, both planes, to avoid colliding, will have to turn only and exclusively each to their right.

In case, however, the planes are on converging routes, the aircraft coming from the right will have the right to precedence. The latter must necessarily maintain its course, altitude and speed of the vehicle unchanged, precisely to prevent any movement from causing a possible collision. But the rules of precedence may undergo variations, for example when two vehicles with different propulsion are found on the collision course. Think of a Cessna and a hot air balloon. The latter, as less maneuverable, will always have the right of way.

For what concern overtaking in flight, this term indicates the approach of an aircraft to the rear of another, "along a line that forms an angle of 70 degrees to the plane of symmetry of the other aircraft. That is, in such a position that, at night, it should not be able to see the navigation lights, neither to the right nor to the left.". The right of way belongs to the aircraft that is about to be overtaken, while the one being overtaken must keep away from the trajectory of the aircraft it is overtaking, changing its bow to the right. These obligations bind the drivers until the overtaking phase is completed and you are in free and safe spaces.
