The origins of Thai massage

Legend has it that Thai massage was born in India by Jivaka Kumar Bhaccha, Buddha's doctor, more than 2,500 years ago and later arrived in Thailand.
This is where the Thai massage it was soon used by monks to treat diseases, combining Ayurvedic principles with elements of traditional Chinese medicine.
Although there are no written documents about it, it is said that its creator Jivaka Kumar Bhacca, nicknamed "Daddy Doctor", accompanied the Buddha in his wanderings and studying Ayurvedic medicine, also deepening the knowledge of the medical traditions of the populations he met in his travels with the Buddha.

This led him to develop a therapeutic technique composed of massage and some herbal preparations and in which it is possible to find the principles of Ayurvedic medicine with those of chinese medicine, among which acupuncture, the reflexology footbed, tui na and lo shatsu.
There are two forms of Thai massage: a classic and a thai oil massages.
The traditional Thai massage it is more energetic and also called Thai Yoga, characterized by the fact that the therapist uses hands, knees, legs and feet to perform the massage.
The thai oil massage, on the other hand, it is much more delicate and does not require important pressures, but rather a sliding along the energy lines of the body treated with aromatic oils.
The Thai massage it is performed on a futon, that is a mat placed on the floor and involves the use by the holistic operator of a series of muscle compression techniques, acupressure and joint mobilization. For this reason, it is recommended that the treated subjects wear comfortable clothes that favor passive movements.

Traditional Thai massage is characterized by stronger pressure than theoil massage, but it is also true that the experienced operator, who followed a very good one training course, he knows well that it is possible to dose the pressure, making it now more significant and now softer depending on the case.

What is Thai massage useful for

Working on the energy lines of the body, called SEN, Thai massage acts on the energy flow of the body restoring a psychophysical balance and allowing to:

    • relax and reduce stress
    • increases the energy of body and mind
    • improve circulation
    • eliminate toxins from the body
    • help the immune system to strengthen itself
    • slows down the aging process
    • improved posture
    • improvement of the functionality of the nervous system

Contraindications

There are also some contraindications for Thai massage. In fact, this should not be done on those suffering from arterial hypertension, heart disorders, osteoporosis, and in the presence of fractures, by pass, severe discopathies, hernias and in pregnancy.
Areas operated surgically or in the presence of prostheses, metal plates, irritation or abrasions should not be treated, nor should areas with varicose veins or during the menstrual cycle.
